How to Choose a Software Development Company: A 7-Point Checklist

April 20, 20267 min read

Hiring the wrong development partner is expensive in ways that don't show up until months later — missed deadlines, code you can't maintain, or a product that technically works but doesn't hold up under real users. Here's what to actually check before you commit.

1. Ask to See Real, Shipped Work

Portfolio slides are easy to fake; live products are not. Ask for links to apps or websites currently in production, ideally in an industry close to yours.

2. Check Who Actually Writes the Code

Some agencies sell you a senior team on the call, then hand the project to whoever's available. Ask directly who will be assigned, and what their experience level is.

3. Get a Fixed Scope, Not Just a Fixed Price

A quote without a written scope is a quote that can grow indefinitely. Make sure the proposal lists exactly what's included — and what counts as a change request.

4. Confirm They'll Sign an NDA

Any legitimate development company will sign a non-disclosure agreement without hesitation. Hesitation here is a red flag about how seriously they treat client confidentiality.

5. Understand Their Communication Cadence

Weekly updates or demos should be the default, not something you have to request. Ask how and how often you'll hear from the team once work starts.

6. Ask What Happens After Launch

A working app on day one isn't the finish line — bugs, OS updates, and scaling issues show up after launch. Confirm whether ongoing maintenance and support is available and what it costs.

7. Trust the Scoping Call, Not Just the Sales Pitch

The initial consultation is a preview of what working together will feel like. A partner who asks sharp questions about your users and business model is more valuable than one who just says yes to everything.

We're happy to be evaluated against this exact checklist — book a free consultation and see how we hold up.
